After-School Program Highlights

At River Heights Elementary School we have a wonderful opportunity for children to participate in After-School Programs on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from 3:15 - 5:30 pm.  We have three components to our program:  Clubs, Tutoring/Homework Help, Reading Roadrunners.  We serve an average of 100 – 125 children per day.

Clubs - After-School Clubs is a fabulous opportunity for children to try something new or do something that they enjoy.  We run 2 sessions each school year with each session running from 8 - 10 weeks.  Here is a sampling of clubs we offer:  Soccer, Cooking, Arts & Crafts, Funky Foods, Games Around the World, Improve Your Self-Esteem, Dick & Jane Book Club, Fun with Music, Fitness Club, Beading & Braiding, and Book Writing.  Each club has approximately 10 children.

Tutoring/Homework Help - We also provide a chance for academic enhancement through our Tutoring program.  Teachers recommend children to participate in this program.  Our tutoring program links one or two children with a tutor.  The tutor works with the children to improve their skills and also to help them with their homework.

Reading Roadrunners - Our Reading Roadrunner program links a child with a "coach" to work one-on-one to help improve reading skills such as phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  Teachers also recommend students to participate in this program.  Our goal in our Reading Roadrunner program is to get children excited about reading while building their basic reading skills.  We plan fun activities related to books that we read.

Partners In Our After-School Program - We partner with UW-Stout Students and Faculty, Parents, and Community Members to lead our after-school clubs and provide the tutoring and coaching assistance.  It is a fabulous opportunity for UW-Stout students to get some teaching experience.  Parents and community members that want to be more involved in the school have an opportunity to share a talent or interest with children.  This connection brings parents, and the community together with the school to help children improve their skills and keep learning fun.  Our after-school program would not be successful without the dedication of our partners.
